CARRARA QUARRY

The journey begins at the most iconic marble quarry located in Carrara. Pablo Damian Cristi focuses his research on connecting feelings and intuition with the right piece of marble to create The Third Christ Carrying the Cross Giustiniani.

Pablo Damian Cristi has made his selection of a block of Carrara statuary marble to bring The Third Christ Carrying The Cross Giustiniani, to life. Through a thorough exploration of the Sponda quarry, also known as "La Madonna" in Carrara, Pablo meticulously identified the perfect block, which holds a particular historical significance as there are records confirming Michelangelo's footsteps in the same quarry.

The quest for the ideal marble block spanned a year and a half, with the sculptor diligently combining sentiment and intuition to discover the most suitable piece of marble.

The first Strike-

MONEGLIA

On June 3, 2021, a vibrant block of marble arrived in Moneglia through an exceptional transport directly from the Carrara quarry La Madonna. This marble block emanates a pure light and presents an extraordinary challenge for Pablo Damian Cristi. Leading the project is Jerȏme-Luc Muniglia Giustiniani, the true driving force behind it, who hails from Moneglia and has recently resettled in Genoa after a lineage that has traversed the East and West for centuries.

With the support of the Municipality of Moneglia and the Bollo family, the marble block was placed in an open area owned by the latter, within the walls of the ruined castle of Villafranca, located on the eastern headland of the coastal village.

On June 16, 2021, in an intimate yet significant ceremony, Pablo delivered the first blow of the chisel to the marble block in the presence of Moneglia's mayor, Claudio Magro. To everyone's surprise, including Pablo himself, at the very moment of the first strike, the main church of Moneglia rang its bells, as if to indicate that every element was in the right place at the right time, offering both a physical and spiritual welcome to the exceptional artwork that would soon take shape: the Third Christ Carrying the Cross Giustiniani. This connection directly links it to the sculptor of the first two statues, crafted 500 years ago: Michelangelo Buonarroti.

The proposal for the new statue, which, like its predecessors, will stand over two meters tall, originates from the same Genoese family with historical ties to the first two statues: the Giustiniani family, now dispersed across various countries around the world.

The Third Christ Carrying The Cross Giustiniani

Pablo Damian Cristi and 'The Third Christ Carrying The Cross Giustiniani' has a three-month residency at the Royal Exchange in London in collaboration with Red8 Gallery from November 2023 to January 2024.

The Second Unveiling was truly a night where the grandest expressions of art took center stage. The magnificent Royal Exchange provided the perfect setting, and from its balconies, we witnessed the unparalleled performance of the London City Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by the esteemed Olsi Quinami, and the soul-stirring voice of soprano Roberta Salvati from La Scala Opera, Italy. Special thanks to the Japan Music Society Choir for welcoming us beneath the pillars of the Royal Exchange, setting the stage for an extraordinary evening.

Following the warm reception by our hosts, we were serenaded by harpist Amie True, leaving Prince Jerome d'Giustiniani enchanted by the presentation. In a night brimming with talent and art, we were honoured by the presence of pianist Ian Jones, an honorary member of the Royal College of Music, a distinction conferred by His Majesty King Charles.

After insightful speeches by Don Jerome Luc Moneglia d'Giustiniani, renowned sculptor Pablo Damian Cristi, researcher and professor Iw Roumiana Popova Assenina, symbolism specialist Alejandro Angelica, and project manager Liana Neal, over 400 people gathered at the entrance of the Royal Exchange at 10 p.m. to collectively sing the name of the moment's sculptor, Pablo Damian Cristi. As we encircled the monumental sculpture, the much-anticipated moment had arrived—the unveiling. The grand reveal was officiated by Prince Jerome Luc Moneglia D'Giustiniani and Marquess Enrico Giustiniani. With a pull of the red silk, 'The Third Christ Carrying The Cross Giustiniani' in its current state was unveiled.

We are thrilled to unveil our commitment to opening the doors to the creative process, allowing the public to bear witness to the artist's wellspring of inspiration, resilience, and raw emotions. This initiative is designed to forge a profound connection between the audience and both the artwork and its creator.
